FAITH. IDENTITY. PURPOSE
🧱 WEEK 1: BUILD WITH GOD – Focus: Let God establish what you’re building
DAY 4
👉 Scripture
Luke 14:28 (KJV)
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
👉 “What if…” perspective shift
What if the greatest question before you build isn’t, “Will God bless this?” but, “Did God ask me to build this?”
It is possible to have vision, ambition, resources, and even good intentions—and still begin constructing something God never instructed you to build.
Sometimes we become so focused on asking God to bless our plans that we never stop long enough to surrender those plans to Him.
Jesus teaches us in Luke 14:28 that wise builders do not rush into construction. They sit down first. They consider what the building will require. They count the cost before laying the foundation.
And spiritually, there is another question worth asking before we build:
Is God in this?
Before you build bigger, make sure you are building with God.
👉 Breakdown
Luke 14:28 appears within Jesus’ teaching about the cost of discipleship. Jesus was not merely giving construction advice. He was confronting casual commitment.
Following Him would cost something.
Jesus wanted people to understand what they were saying yes to before claiming they were ready to follow Him.
That principle reaches deeply into the way we build our lives.
We build careers.
We build businesses.
We build ministries.
We build relationships.
We build families.
We build platforms.
We build dreams for the future.
And sometimes, because what we are building looks good, we assume God must be behind it.
But good ideas and God-led assignments are not always the same thing.
You can have an impressive blueprint without God’s instruction.
You can have momentum without His direction.
You can even experience outward success while becoming inwardly exhausted because you are carrying something He never asked you to carry.
That is why surrender has to come before construction.
Before asking God to expand something, ask Him to examine it.
Before asking Him for more resources, ask whether the assignment came from Him.
Before asking Him to make it bigger, ask Him to make your heart obedient.
Because God’s goal is not simply to make your plans successful.
He wants your life surrendered.
Counting the cost means recognizing that obedience may require patience. It may require sacrifice. It may require saying no to opportunities that look impressive. It may even require laying down a plan you have already become emotionally attached to.
Sometimes counting the cost reveals that you need greater commitment.
Other times, surrender reveals that you were building the wrong thing altogether.
Both require humility.
There is freedom in allowing God to establish what belongs in your life instead of exhausting yourself trying to maintain something He never assigned to you.
You do not need God to become a supporting character in a story you already wrote.
You need Him to be the Author.
So before you lay another brick, make another move, sign another agreement, expand another vision, or chase another opportunity, bring the blueprint back to God.
Ask:
“Father, is this what You are building in me and through me?”
And be willing to hear His answer.
👉 “A lot of people…” contrast
A lot of people decide what they want, build the plan, and then ask God to bless it.
Biblical surrender reverses the order.
We seek God first.
We listen.
We surrender.
We count the cost.
Then we build according to His direction.
Culture tells us bigger means better.
God may tell us obedience is better.
Culture celebrates speed.
God develops patience.
Culture asks, “How far can you take this?”
Surrender asks, “God, how far are You asking me to go?”
The goal is not simply to build something impressive.
The goal is to build a life that remains faithful to the One who called you.
👉 Truth statements
👉 Not every good opportunity is a God assignment.
👉 Surrender the blueprint before asking God to bless the building.
👉 God’s presence matters more than impressive progress.
👉 Obedience may require you to build slowly—or stop building altogether.
👉 Counting the cost protects you from committing to something you were never called to carry.
👉 You do not need bigger if bigger takes you outside God’s will.
👉 The safest place to build is wherever God is leading.
👉 Challenge
Before making your next move today, take your plans before God.
Choose one thing you are currently building or pursuing and ask Him three questions:
Did You lead me here?
What will obedience require from me?
Is there anything in my plan I need to surrender?
Then give God enough quiet to answer.
Don’t just ask Him to bless your blueprint.
Give Him permission to change it.
👉 Prayer
Father, thank You for caring about what I build and who I become while building it. Forgive me for the times I have created my own plans and simply asked You to bless them afterward.
Teach me to seek You before I move.
Give me wisdom to count the cost, discernment to recognize Your direction, and courage to surrender anything that did not begin with You. If I am building something You never asked me to build, give me the humility to release it. If You have called me to build it, give me the faith and endurance to remain obedient when the cost becomes real.
I don’t want success without Your presence. I don’t want expansion that pulls me away from intimacy with You. I want my plans, desires, decisions, and future surrendered to Your wisdom.
Before I build bigger, teach me to build with You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
