🔥 WEEK 4: COURAGE TO FOLLOW – Focus: Following God when obedience costs something
DAY 28
👉 Scripture
Deuteronomy 31:8 (NKJV)
“And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
👉 “What if…” perspective shift
What if courage isn’t about feeling fearless before you move—but trusting that God is already standing in the place He is asking you to go?
Sometimes we wait for fear to disappear before we obey.
We want certainty before the conversation. Confidence before the decision. Confirmation before the step. We want to know how everything will work out before we surrender our yes.
But God doesn’t always remove the uncertainty before He calls us forward.
Sometimes He simply reminds us:
“I go before you.”
You may not know what is waiting on the other side of your obedience—but God does.
And He is already there.
👉 Breakdown
Deuteronomy 31 records a major transition for Israel. Moses was preparing the people to enter the Promised Land, and Joshua would soon carry the responsibility of leading them forward.
There were real battles ahead.
Real opposition.
Real uncertainty.
Joshua had every human reason to feel the weight of what was coming. Yet Moses did not strengthen him by promising an easy road. He strengthened him by reminding Joshua of who would be on the road with him.
“The LORD… goes before you.”
That changes everything.
Following Jesus will sometimes require courage because obedience will not always be comfortable, popular, convenient, or inexpensive.
God may ask you to forgive when holding the offense feels easier.
He may ask you to speak when silence protects your reputation.
He may ask you to leave something familiar without showing you every detail of what comes next.
He may ask you to remain faithful when quitting would bring immediate relief.
He may ask you to take a step that makes complete sense spiritually while making very little sense to the people around you.
Those moments expose where our confidence really lives.
Biblical courage is not pretending fear doesn’t exist.
Courage is choosing obedience because God’s presence is greater than the uncertainty in front of you.
God told Joshua, through Moses, that He would go before him, remain with him, and never abandon him.
That same truth teaches us something important about obedience: when God leads you somewhere, you are not stepping into a place beyond His reach.
Before you enter the room, He is there.
Before you have the conversation, He is there.
Before you begin again, He is there.
Before you face the consequences of obedience, He is there.
You are not walking toward an unknown future alone.
You are following a God who already sees what you cannot.
👉 “A lot of people…” contrast
A lot of people think courage means becoming confident enough in themselves to finally take the step.
Scripture points us somewhere better.
Our confidence is not ultimately in ourselves.
It is in God’s presence, faithfulness, and character.
The world says, “Believe in yourself.”
Faith says, “Trust the One who goes before you.”
There may still be fear.
There may still be questions.
There may still be a cost.
But obedience does not require you to know everything that will happen.
It requires you to trust the One who does.
👉 Truth statements
👉 You do not have to see the entire road to take the next obedient step.
👉 God is already present in the place He is calling you to enter.
👉 Courage is not the absence of fear; it is obedience anchored in God’s faithfulness.
👉 Uncomfortable obedience is still obedience.
👉 God’s calling will never require you to walk without His presence.
👉 You can face what is ahead because God has already gone before you.
👉 Challenge
Identify one step of obedience you have been delaying because of fear.
Don’t try to solve the entire future today.
Ask God, “What is my next faithful step?”
Then take it.
Not because you know exactly what will happen—but because you know the One who goes before you.
👉 Prayer
Father, thank You that I never have to walk into the unknown alone. You see what I cannot see, You know what I do not know, and You are already present in every place You are calling me to go.
Give me courage to obey You even when obedience is uncomfortable, inconvenient, unpopular, or costly. When fear tells me to retreat, remind me that my confidence does not have to come from myself. My confidence comes from You.
Help me stop waiting until I feel completely fearless before I move. Teach me to trust Your presence more than my uncertainty. Give me wisdom for the next step and faith to take it.
Wherever You lead me, help me remember that You have already gone before me. You will be with me. You will not leave me or forsake me.
I choose to trust You and move forward.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
